    FACE TO FACE SCHOOLS CLOSED THROUGH JUNE 4th, 2020 

     

    Dear Maple Heights Students, Parents and Families,

    Governor Mike DeWine has announced that all of Ohio’s public, community, and private K-12 school buildings will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.   We know the Governor’s order presents a challenge to our Maple Heights City School District (MHCSD)  families. Our district is working diligently to partner with you in furthering your child’s education and well-being. 


    What does this mean for our students?
    Although the MHCSD school buildings are to remain closed, remote learning will continue. We will continue to adjust and administer our virtual learning plans and expectations, provide student services and resources to the best of our ability, and distribute free meals to our students.

    How will remote learning continue?
    The Maple Heights City School District will continue providing remote learning options to children. Administrators are actively planning and responding to this national health crisis. Teachers are creating lesson plans and engaging with their students remotely. Teachers in grades 4 through 12 have created virtual classrooms through Google classrooms, which include online office hours. Students in grades pre-k through 3 will continue to receive “learning packets” which will continue to be sent home to families. Teachers and building principals will be sharing remote Learning plans and expectations with parents and students on and on going basis via email or through other communication tools (i.e Class Dojo, etc).  Administrators and support staff will also be working remotely and available between the hours of 8:30 a.m. -  4:30 pm on weekdays via email and voicemail.

    How will students earn grades for the 4th nine weeks and work to pass courses?
    Please click HERE to review the grading procedures that will be in place during these unprecedented times.  It is critical that students keep up with work through the end of this school year.

    How will Maple Heights Food Services continue?
    Student meals will continue to be picked up at Barack Obama Elementary School or Maple Heights High School between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., except on holidays.  Food Service Department staff continue to comply with the most current health guidelines. Please continue to monitor our website for updates. 

    What about mental health support?
    Our professionals are reaching out to families to ensure they have open lines of communication during the closure, and to make alternative plans if necessary. Our counselors and student support coordinators will be monitoring emails and reaching out to our families in need.

    What does this mean for graduation?
    Our high school administration and teachers will be working together to ensure that students in the Class of 2020 are on track to graduate. The district is waiting to receive more guidance from the Ohio Department of Education. Students who are eligible to graduate will receive their diploma and we are working to develop a plan which will best honor our students under the given circumstances.  Both the Governor’s Office and the Ohio Department of Education are encouraging virtual graduations at this time..   Know that we will work together to provide assistance and flexibility in the interest of doing what is right for our students. We will provide an update as soon as more information is available.

    What about state testing?
    Governor Mike DeWine signed the bill that waived state testing for the 2019-2020 school year. Additionally, the state report cards for school buildings and districts remain unchanged for this school year. 

    What about services to students with disabilities?
    Our school is making a good faith effort to provide such services. If a student with a disability cannot access the alternate delivery models being offered to general education students, then the district will consult with parents and/or caregivers to determine the needs of the student and identify the most appropriate means for meeting those needs during the closure period.

    We are experiencing a health crisis that none of us has experienced in our lifetime. INFORMATION ON LEARNING DURING THE EXTENDED SCHOOL CLOSURES

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN INFORMATION

The safety of our students, families, and staff remains our most important concern in the weeks ahead.  We have developed a plan to continue learning experiences for our students while our schools remain closed through the end of April.

All of our students in grades 4-12 will receive instructional materials/instruction via google classroom.  Starting on Monday, April 6th all class content for the week will be posted.  In the following weeks, class content will be posted every Monday morning.  Teachers will provide virtual “office hours” for parents and students to check in, ask questions, receive clarification, and learn about submitting work.

Students are asked to go to classroom.google.com, and login with Maple credentials.  A class or classes should automatically appear.  Students simply accept the class invitation and join. 

Questions or concerns regarding online access can be addressed with the teacher through email or the app Remind.  If problems persist, we will contact our IT department.

Our students in PreK-through grade three will receive a new learning packet which will be mailed to the house.  If you are a parent of a Pre- school through grade three student and have not received a packet by Friday, April 10th, please use the Remind app or email to contact your child’s teacher to let them know.

Teachers in the primary grades may set up a Google Classroom, Meet, or Hangout.  They may also try to connect through Zoom.  These tools will be in addition to the learning packets.  We are mindful of the fact that not everyone has access to devices and the internet.

Your child’s teachers will provide instructions about which assignments need to be turned in for grades as well as the methods for returning the assignments to the teacher.

 

INFORMATION ABOUT SERVICES TO STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES DURING THE SCHOOL CLOSURE PERIOD

The Ohio Department of Education has provided the following guidance for all schools during this closure period:

First and foremost, schools should prioritize taking all necessary steps to protect the health and safety of their students and discourage activity that might contribute to the spread of the coronavirus. The governor has asked that schools work to provide education through alternative means.

The U.S. Department of Education and Ohio Department of Education understand that schools may not be able to provide all services in the same manner they typically are provided. Schools should continue to try to provide a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) while balancing the need to protect the health and safety of students with disabilities during this national health emergency. It is important for school personnel and parents to work together collaboratively during this time to find ways to continue to serve and educate students with disabilities.

Grades 4-12
Our district plan for providing alternative means of education to students in grades 4-12 is to teach remotely using Google Classroom. The intervention specialists will use Google Classroom to co-teach with their general education partners or as stand-alone classes for students in special education resource rooms. Our related services providers (for example, Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, etc.) will also use Google Classroom. Intervention specialists and related service providers will provide individual and/or small group support to students each week through Google Classroom or Google Hangouts. They will continue to monitor the progress of their students on their IEP goals.

Preschool - Grade 3
For preschool to grade three students, we will be providing educational packets to families. Work will be adapted by the intervention specialists and additional supports provided for students on their caseload. Intervention specialists and related services providers will use the Remind app to communicate with families, which will include links to educational resources and videos for parents to use with their children. The additional resources will be aligned to the IEP goals of the students.
