Family-School-Community Partnerships

Family-school-community partnerships are a shared responsibility and reciprocal process whereby schools and other community agencies and organizations engage families in meaningful and culturally appropriate ways, and families take initiative to actively support their children’s development and learning. Schools and community organizations also make efforts to listen to parents, support them, and ensure that they have the tools to be active partners in their children’s school experience.

Partnerships are essential for helping students achieve at their maximum potential and while parent and community involvement has always been a cornerstone of public schools, greater recognition and support of these collaborative efforts is needed.

Research shows that when schools, parents, families, and communities work together, students:

  • earn higher grades;

  • attend school more regularly;

  • stay in school; and,

  • are more motivated.

This is true for students of all ages, all backgrounds, and across race and ethnicity. Furthermore, a variety of supports cutting across the spectrum of social, health, and academic needs may be necessary for school success. High quality schools have demonstrated track records connecting with community resources and families to improve student outcomes in all domains of development.

Family Engagement

Family engagement is the process used to build genuine relationships with families. Relationships with families support overall family well-being and children's healthy development.  Family engagement is based on the idea that parents and others who care for their children work together to prepare children for success. Partnerships of families and school staff provide children with the adult supports they need to grow and face the challenges of learning and life.

The goal of family-school partnerships have shifted over time, moving away from a focus on families supplementing school supports, compliance with federal or state requirements, and infrequent events, meetings, and communication. Family-school partnerships are now recognized as critical to student achievement and well-being, contributing to educator work satisfaction and school climate (Gorski, 2013).

The Maple Heights City School District understands that families are critical stakeholders in supporting and advancing their children’s learning and development. Parents are a child’s first teacher and upon enrollment a partnership is formed that shares the responsibility of the child’s education and development.  Parents are welcomed and encouraged to be actively engaged in the success of the schools. Our focus is to ensure that there are meaningful opportunities to connect with our families, share essential resources and strengthen these essential partnerships.

 When a school actively engages its families, the benefits far outweigh the effort. Connecting the home and the school in a culture of learning not only enhances the skills of students and parents, but also positive relationships between the parent and teacher.
